I planted a acer about 3 weeks ago it is a well established tree approx. 4ft in height I have just noticed it is dropping its leaves the leaves appear healthy and the tree isn't in a particularly windy location I put fish and bone meal in when I planted it any ideas as to what is happening

Could it simply be that autumn is here?

I hope so but it isn't particularly cold here at the moment
It's not cold here in Norfolk, but the leaves are changing colour and falling nonetheless ... I think part of the trigger is day-length as well as temperature.
Coupled with a bit of 'transplant shock' your acer may well have decided it's autumn
