What's wrong with my potatoes?

imageThese allotment grown potatoes(Red Duke of York) look fine on the outside no obvious pest or fungal damage or on peeling, but cut them open and this is what I find.....very puzzled....all help gratefully accepted. Thanks

  • Think that's Hollow Heart disease - often caused by a period of rapid growth following a cool period when the growth was slow .

  • Hi, thank you very much, that explains a lot.....the potatoes we lifted at the end of July appear to be free from this condition, but as you know August was wet and we didn't get to lift these until the end of that month. The South Yorkshire weather is obviously to blame.....

just one further question, are they edible? I've tossed the ones I've found so far.

    Thank you

  • It's not really a disease as such, more a physiological disorder caused by growing conditions.  I had it on a couple of very large spuds which I recently lifted.  That very dry spring many of us had this year is the cause, I would think.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
  • You can cut the bad bits out and use the rest ... should be fine ... I've survived doing it image
