plant(s) to cover low stone boundary wall

I have cleared a long-neglected border at the front of my house. The border sits behind a low (30") limestone boundary wall.
I'm searching for something that can be trained fairly tightly against, and partially over, the wall. Can herringbone Cotoneasters be controlled this much without ruining their natural form? Another possibility I've considered is a variegated Ivy.
Any suggestions please.

The main issue will be where the light is coming from. Plants will always tend to grow towards it, so if you're trying to manipulate anything, you'll need to bear that in mind.
Cotoneasters will tend to sprawl and cover things, but they will still have to be facing the right way - ivies are the same. It's possible you could pin the ivy down a bit, (difficult on a wall though) but it won't necessarily work terribly well if the aspect's wrong.
