i saw these seed heads in an old garden this morning, and thought how lovely they were
anyone can help identify them for me ?

Looks like Phlomis, Anne. Yellow flowers

Phlomis russelliana. The stems will stand all winter and look nice frosted or covered in snow.
if they rattle, they've still got seeds in them . Sow now and they'll germinate next Spring.
