Physocarpus Diabola, Weigela, Skimmia, Yew, Contorted Hazel, Berberis and Cotinus all grow in my south facing border about ten feet in from large deciduous trees on woodland on the other side of the fence.
These are now mature shrubs about twenty years old.
If the weather is very dry I let the hose run onto the soil to give them a good soak.
Thanks Joyce really fancy the cotinus will it be ok west facing?
Yes Dennis. it will be fine.
I also have a variegated holly and Lonicera Dropmore Scarlet in that border.

Dennis, I have just taken these pics and as you can see, they have all grown to large healthy shrubs.
