Yew bare root planting, autumn of spring?

When is the best time to plant bare root yew?

I read before that March is good...

Any preference, reason for either?

Autumn for bare root anything - soil still warm and the roots have time to settle before the plants get active in spring and require food and water supplies from their roots.

Are the roots really active, or are they just completely dormant until spring anyway?

No, the roots grow thru winter which means they can get themselves well established before they have to meet the demands of a waking tree in spring when spa starts to rise and all that new growth happens.
