Problems with Thuja occidentalis smaragd

Hello. I was told these conifers should not turn brown in autumn/winter but it seems mine do... I was also told they are quite hardy.
I planted these in the spring. They grow in heavy clay and it rains a lot in Scotland. Can that be a reason? Or is it a some kind of mite or lack of minerals? I was told not to use anything in the first year.
Any help will be much appreciated!

Even in areas of heavy rainfall , pot grown conifers can suffer from 'drought' in their first few years ; it is vital to keep the rootball wet constantly for optimum growth .
A little amount of dieback is not uncommon on Thujas , mistakenly named 'Western Red Cedars' ; no relatives of the true Cedars .
Don't be too concerned about the browning foliar tips ; once root establishment is achieved , growth should be flourishing next year .
