However I spend hours working in the garden and have not spent very much time sitting outside just enjoying it this summer.

I think a lot of us fall into this trap even Monty on TV  has mentioned this that sometimes we need to just sit relax & take it all in. Trouble is when I sit in my garden I usually notice something else that needs doing.image

  • You have hit the nail on the head there Iain, it is difficult to relax and enjoy the surroundings when you know you REALLY should be weeding, watering, pruning ...... and so the list grows quicker than the plants sometimes.

When we were younger we used to have garden sunbeds which we often used, we had picnics in the garden too but I find as we have aged the jobs seem more important and urgent - oh dear is that the pace of life catching up with us these days?

  • Reading the headline of this thread made me shudder.

I live in The Netherlands and since last year our blackbirds are being hit by the Usutu virus. That's a tropical virus which is carried by mosquitos in Africa, and then spread by migrating birds. In 2012 it killed over 300.000 blackbirds in Germany. In some regions there were hardly any left.image

I used to have at least 2 nests in my garden every year, but this year there were none. I only saw one young bird this year, and that didn't look very healthy. There even is a sprcial website here in the country where people can register dead birds they find and these birds can then be sent to a special address, so that they can be used for research into the virus.

Last week I heard a backbird somewhere in the garden, and I can't you how happy that made me. image

I really hope this horrible virus won't reach the UK.

  • Lets hope it does not come here but given our inability to keep other pests & diseases out of the UK then we will have to keep our fingers crossed.

I dare say Monty can sit and relax and take it all in, he’s probably got a team of fit young men working for him, Me, I’ve just got one, and I’m not so sure he’s that fit?

  • Standing at Kitchen sink I noticed movement on the lawn. A flash of red a hint of green could it be?

OH JOY YES the Green Woodpecker was paying a visit image  It was there for quite a while meant I could not get down to the greenhouse for a full 20 min but no matter, haven't seen one for an absolute age. Made my day

  • OH was by Kitchen door yesterday standing guard over Robbin to stop the Magpies stealing all the dried mealworms.  By chance she looked up to conifers in Neighbours garden 2-3 doors away & over the back, we just had time to grab the Bin's to confirm "our" first flock of Fieldfares of the Autumn/ Winter before they all flew on. Haven't seen them in the gardens for several couple of years so maybe the predictions of a cold winter are true this time!
