Direct sowing.

I should like to grow some hardy annuals next year but I have NO success putting seeds straight into the ground. My assistants - slugs, pigeons, mice, cats, badgers and foxes make sure that nothing survives. The slugs are the worst problem. They say annuals cannot be started in trays because they don't like to be moved. Anyone have the same problem but found a solution?

  • You could try sowing in modules.  It's root disturbance which many of them dislike.  If more than one seed germinates in each module, thin out to the strongest one.  That way you have one plant per module which you can plant out without disturbing the roots.

Modules for me too, for most plants, not just annuals.

Easier to control moisture, temperature and pests.  Pot on the good ones then pot on again or plant out if they're big enough to cope with the competition and "helpers".

Thanks, I'll give it a try.
