Getting a Poinsettia to flower

I have a Poinsettia in a pot that I have managed to keep alive from last year.It looks really healthy with lots of leaves, however none of the nice red bracts have developed. How can I encourage them? Thanks for any help.

  • Thank you very much. I would never have guessed that this was the trick!

  • I have been following this regime since 16th September. Unfortunately all that has happened is that some of the lower leaves have turned yellow and droopy. Should I continue?

The article says at least 4 weeks.  You are being a tad impatient.

Having said that, they are so cheap to buy nearer Xmas why not just start again?  Put your time and effort into more rewarding plants.

Remember mature plants need air as much as you and me. Do not allow any kind of cover touch the leaves and make sure air is flowing all around. And do not forget they need some warmth (but not sweltering heat), as they bloom in winter when temperatures are milder.
