There are hundreds of varieties suitable for a west facing wall, though not so many clems are evergreen. There are early flowering ones like the armandiis and cirrhosas which are evergreen. It'll sometimes depend where you are in the country too, as they aren't all happy if you have an exposed, windy site.

Can you give a bit more info on the site and surroundings?

You could also take a look at the reputable online suppliers and growers - Taylor's, Thorncroft, Hawthorne's, Evison's etc. You cna put in your requirements, and you'll get all the ones which wlil suit you  image

The obvious ones are the Armandii forms but, personally, I find their foliage unattractive and dull and rather imposing unless you are very clever about growing them up a climbing rose frame to extend interest thru summer.

I rather fancy this one which is much more delicate looking but haven't yet got a home for it - http://www.clematis.hull.ac.uk/new-clemdetail.cfm?dbkey=75
