My pear tree bark appears to be splitting not sure what to do to remedy the problem

Sounds like possible canker or similar. Better to post a photograph of the trunk area, as that will help.
One of mine also has what I believe is canker on the trunk (rootstock) - was like this when I bought it (didn't know what it was at the time) and has never affected the health of the tree.
So guessing it isn't always serious?
