Laying grass under a partially shady tree
Hello,
I'm looking for advice on how to lay grass underneath the tree, as seen in the pictures, basically turf versus seed?
Will turf do the trick or do I need special grass seed that is good at growing in the shade? The sun comes over on the side opposite the fence, ie. behind the camera in the first picture, so looks directly at the main section that needs turfing. A lot of the area needing turfing gets good light but will be partially shaded. There may be a fair amount of shade behind the tree (by the fence) but it does get a fairly good level of light.
Hoping you can help.
Many thanks,
Phil

Hi
Your problem is not just shade but dry soil that you will need to overcome. I would reconsider turfing or seeding the area. I had the same situation and in the end decided to put plants that would thrive in that situation. I would improve the soil around the tree incoporating soil conditioners such as treated farmyard manure. TheRev are a lot of shade to part shade plants you could plant in that area such as Hosta, Ferns, Heuchera, Geranium to name a few. The further away from the centre of the tree should mean most will thrive
Thanks for the reply. Very interesting so I'll consider that as an option. I guess I could turf a little around the edges to neaten it up and then plant some of the plants you mention closer to the tree.
Thanks again.
