vine weevil attack

Has anyone else noticed a massive increase in vine weevils this year?

for the first time i'm seeing major damage on leaves and plants suffering from the roots being damaged. i'm usually a live and let live gardener and most years I don't treat anything as the damage isn't too bad, but this year i'm going to get some nematodes and kill the little blighters off!

just wondering if anyone else had noticed the dramatic increase in vine weevils? i'm assuming its because where I am we had a fairly dry warm winter and they survived it in grub stage more than normal?

  • Oh yes. Just posted a pickie this morning of a plant I needed help with, but the leaves are so damaged it's almost unrecognizable. I am in france and garden in pots and planters, I always get some but this year they have devastated all sorts of leaves and I hate to think what the state of my planters soil is with grubs.

  • Lots more i my garden this yearimage  we are getting on average one a day. lets hope all this rain drowns the little blighters.image

We had an invasion of them a couple of years ago. Hostas and agapanthus in pots hit very badly.

I was wondering , re firecracker's comment, If you plunged a pot to the top of the compost, ( obviously , it'd only be practical with smallish pots. How long would it have to be "underwater" to kill the grubs, but not the plant?

I'm pretty sure most plants could have the compost in water for an hour or two with no ill effects, think of a massive downpour?

They've survived massive downpours here, they don't seem to drown, I am currently emptying my baskets, some have dozens in, I've sifted through the compost and put them out for the birds.
