Which hedging plant?

  • Thanks for the feedback, without sounding too dense... how do you really know if your soil is damp/wet/clay/sandy/dry based other than "stick your hand in it" is there an obvious cut off?

If I knew that beech would be fine it would be preferable to hornbeam I think.

I second that Perki says about Blackthorn suckering. It's also vicious. I'd go 100% Hornbeam and keep it formal.

I still think Portuguese Laurel is worth considering. As is Holly:

Can't go wrong with Hornbeam though.

"What is hateful to you, do not do to your neighbour".
  • Ok, decision made, 100% hornbeam it is :-)

Any thought's on my other questions above?

     - Should I plant in a single line or two staggered? How many plants per metre?

    - I've read to prepare 30cm of soil either side of the plants, so this would be planting them 30cm away from the brick wall, is that correct?

     - I'm looking at getting bare root whips in Nov, probably 60-90cm ones. Should these be cut back when first planted?

     - I'm going to be digging out a variety of mature shrubs to make way for the hedge, what kind of prep should I do to the soil? Mycorrhizal fungi? Bonemeal?

     - Is a leaky hosepipe overkill for 10m of hedges?

  • I just was choosing a plant for a future hedge, but seems like I don't want a privet any more because of constant neighbour's complaints. It grows rather fast, I will consider another plant. I will choose something from this source  https://www.ashridgetrees.co.uk/hedging , I guess Holly will be perfect.
