Moving a large Acer

We need to move a large Acer (more than 6ft) from one part of the garden to another. What is the best time to do this? Should we wait until the winter? Should we enrich the new planting hole? Any advice appreciated thanks.

Can I ask what sort of Acer it is?
Moving a "tree" type Acer, eg Drummundii / Platanoides etc is very different to moving one of the "Japanese" types.
Don't know what variety it is I am afraid. It is tree shaped and has bright red maple-shape leaves.
Could be Acer Palmatum.
