Biting bugs

Hi can anyone advise me I love gardening but I'm always getting bitte especially behind my knees when I'm kneeling down weeding. What can I do?

I've tried garlic...didn't work for me although I enjoyed mucho garlicky flavoured treats.
Tried brewers yeast and got shiney shiney hair but still got bitten.
Avon SSS (original) definitely helps with midges and mozzies but the big black jobbies still fly at me before they realise I'm doused in the stuff!
Thank you for your replies. I have heard avons sss works for others so I may have to try it. I think I am being bitten by ants as there are a lot in the garden and even when I have long trousers on I get bitten. Anyone have any thoughts!
For mozzies they have preferences to certain blood groups, I get bitten by everything so just carry around antihistamines!
Ticks are a whole different issue through, luckily not a problem in the area I live yet!
