Globe Artichokes
in Fruit & veg
I would really like to try growing Globe Artichokes but have no space to grow them in the open ground. Is it possible to grow them, and get a crop in pots?
Thanks

Hello Giddy123
Probably feasible to grow Globe Artichoke (Cynara scolymus) in large pots ; I would opt for large terra-cotta .
As they originate from drier climes than ours , the occasional lapse in watering would not pose a major threat to their health .
Low - nitrogen fertiliser during summer would be an asset ; also imagine what the silvery foliage would look like against the colour of a clay pot !
I've grown globe artichokes this year and the plants are absolutely huge so I think you'd need a very large container (unless there are smaller varieties?). They do look lovely though and you don't need many to produce a good number of artichokes. Mine have survived very well on neglect in the dry weather we had through June so I agree about the watering.
They are very large plants and mine have 2 main stems about an inch and a half in diameter and 5ft tall. The flowers are very heavy too, so a square container of 50x50cm minimum to prevent being blown over would be needed IMO.
Bob is absolutely correct here ; the flower heads are reminiscent of medieval clubs and about as heavy
Like a lot of plants in pots , would they attain a smaller stature with restricted root-space ?
They would need a soil based compost as well- J I 3 plus extra grit & feed.
