Remove leylandii stumps

I have leylandii stumps about 2-3ft apart in my borders.  They are about 6-8" diameter and the hedge was removed 18months ago. How can I either remove them or enrich the ground between them to grow flowering shrubs?

The best solution is to remove them with a stump-grinder. Tree surgeons and some gardening services will be able to do this for you. In my experience, people often leave the stumps because of the extra cost involved in stump removal. By removing these stumps, however, you gain more garden to plant up and enjoy.

My garden and I live in South Wales.

If the remaining stump is long enough to give some leverage you should be able to remove them youself using the same method as described in 'Removing Old Shrub' topic.

  • Thanks!

  • I wouldn't get a stump grinder for stumps that size. Use a mattock and dig down around them, combination of sawing the roots and heaving the stump will get them out.

Should be easy enough to get out by hand. I find a bricklayers hammer great to expose the roots.

You could leave one and make it into a chair or stool.

Based in Sussex, I garden to encourage as many birds to my garden as possible.
