'Butternut' Squash

i have 2 dark green squash, about 13" in length and quite chunky. Before I came on holiday in late August a few yellow markings were appearing here and there. Any idea what they are? image

Nothing like my butternuts or anything else I'm growing this year.   Did you sow them are they volunteers from the compost heap?

  • I planted 2 varieties, regular butternut but also some 'Tozer' (this the manufacturner) winter squash which were in plain wrapping with no picture. I think it must be them but I haven't been able to identify them anywhere.

I suggest you raise them off the soil with a brick or some straw to stop them getting damp and rotting and also to let them ripen in the September sun.

  • Something as simple as rain drying on the surface of the plant can damage the skin, but unless it goes mushy or looks rotten then it's done no harm.?
