Fence height

Please can anyone tell me (a) is there a height restriction for neighbouring fences? and if so (b) if your neighbour's property is much higher that yours, does that factor in so that the finished height is at the restricted level?

In the UK there is no law about fence heights so you have to check your own local planning rules with the appropriate department of your local council. Generally speaking, back garden fences can be up to 2m high.
Have a look here for some basic info - http://www.boundary-problems.co.uk/boundary-problems/fences.html
Rules also differ between England, Wales and Scotland and no doubt NI. You may need planning permission to change the height of a fence but not to repair or replace with a similar fence or change a fence in a conservation area..
Think it's 2 metres here (Scotland) but Obelixx is right - there can be variations, so check with the local council.
Here, the rules are different depending on where the boundary is - front gardens are lower. It also has to be a certain distance from a public road if you want a 2 metre fence, otherwise you need permission. Again - that may vary area to area.
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
Interesting question though about max height if the neighbouring garden is much higher. Given a situation where the maximum height allowed was 6 feet, would that be from your garden level or that of the neighbour? Again an answer which only your local council can answer.
One would assume it's from ground level at the base of said fence otherwise if your neighbours' house was considerably higher than your's they'd have to dig a hole to put their fence in!
As said above, check with your local authority re heights but I'm pretty sure it's 2m depending on where it is.
Thanks for replies, I will investigate further. I only ask because my neighbours garden is approx 90cm higher than mine so when he is over his side, his hedge is up to his thighs, but on my side it is up to my chest. Although this is fine at the moment because he has always been respectful about not plunging me into darkness (as we get on well) he has put his property on the market and I fear the new owners may not find this so agreeable. So If for example they put up a 2m fence it would be nearer to 3m on my side!
