GROWING MELONS

Had a really good harvest of cantaloupe melons this year .

These pics are the second pickings. I would be interested to know if anybody else has had success with melons and what type they have grown and how they grew them.

  • Thanks scroggin. I was really pleased with my results .

Started them off in the conservatory , planted them out beginning of June under a little polythene tunnel through black plastic sheeting for a couple of weeks until they got established , then removed the tunnel and just watered regularly. Think the black plastic helps with heat retention . I only planted three plants and they all came good .

By the way they tasted delicious .

  • Looks like an excellent crop. Really impressive Whereabouts in the country are you?

  • Wow what a crop. I have grown outdoor wonder and sweetheart  both in greenhouse and outside but only ever get 1 or 2 fruits per plant.  They do taste great though.

    AB Still learning

  • I am down in Oxfordshire .

This is my third year growing this particular type of melon and they have always come good .By the way they are called Petit Gris De Renne.

  • Thanks. So a bit warmer than here (Herefordshire), but I might give one a try next year. Depends on space though - the vegetable garden's only so big and I like to grow a lot of squash.

Hmm Last year I grew some pumpkins 4 plants and got 200kg of pumpkins. now they happened to grow out over some black plastic I had down to clear the weeds on the next patch of field.

This year I grew the same ones without the plastic and got one pumpkin and it's maybe 5kg.. I wasn't sure if the plastic was the difference, but I think it might well be looking at that photo. I'll also give some outdoor melons a try on some.
