Used Compost

I've just lifted some carrots from a small planter and the compost they were in is now full of white stringy roots from the carrots.

Can I just reuse the compost by tipping it into another planter and mixing with new compost? Or would you recommend something else?

I would use it as a mulch for your borders.

    Used, done, spent, depleted, finished....

As pdoc says, use it as a mulch.

Yes - I do the same as doc. I tip mine out onto borders in autmn/winter, on any 'bare' areas in particular, or where perennials have died down. image

  • Hi there, I'm new to this, so regarding used soil....duly noted the mulch solution to it, however, can I add it to the compost heap, or would this be a useless enterprise? image

No - you can add it to the compost heap Lizzie. It's all beneficial - keeping the heap healthy, aerated and having a good mix of ingredients  image

I add spent compost to an ongoing compost heap or use it for seedlings, which like low nutrient soil.
