supercolumn cherry

We have had a 'sunburst' supercolumn cherry for 2 years now.

The first year, there were one or two fruits on it, which were taken by birds when they were not even ripe (our naivety).

This year, we were more prepared, so we netted after a reasonable amount of blossom.

We had no idea what would happen next - the tree was ravaged by blackfly, and there were many ants all over the tree.  What we couldn't work out was what on earth happened to all the fruit buds - they were suddenly non-existent....so no fruit whatsoever this year.

Has anyone experienced this, or could anyone explain what happened?   Surely this isn't related to the netting?

Next year we will not net until the fruits begin to develop, but we are begin to think we will never see ripened fruits at this rate.

Please help.

  • anyone?

  • Any reason for the constant capitals, pansy?  It doesn't really come across well as a reader...

I'm in east Midlands.  The tree was hardy enough through the frost - it is sat right next to a plum, which gave us a nice first crop this yr.   So it's a mystery what happened.

As for peaches, I'm not interested in pots, it would be columnar trees against a wall.  If you're saying they aren't hardy then I'll get something else but I don't believe there aren't hardy varieties.

  • It's not necessarily a case of the trees being hardy or not - it's to do with the timing of the flowering and whether there are likely to be frosts in your area coinciding with flowering which will damage the blossom and thereby prevent fruiting.

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

  • Again - the plum next to it didn't suffer at all, so it remains a mystery to us why the cherry buds seemingly disappeared into thin air when it resides next to the plum.

No problem pansy, I'm not sure I fully understand the issue but thanks for clarification.
