Raspberry Canes

I have a large number of late summer/autumn fruiting raspberry canes which provide an abundance of fruit continuously from late summer right through to early October. When we moved to our property, they were so overgrown, that I pruned them right back to the ground straight after fruiting and have done this again last year with no effect on fruiting. However, I have learnt that they should not be cut back until February...any advice here please? I am keen to prune early as they are absolutely smothered in creeping vine leaves.
