They do not take all that long from seed. I have them in flower now from seed sown 3 years ago.

I keep mine in the poly tunnel over winter with no water at all. Watering begins when the bulb begins to sprout in Spring.

I have one burgundy and 3 "normal". I cut the first flush of stalk off a couple of weeks ago. Fingers crossed for another flush.

  • Perhaps I should have cut my stem/stalk off earlier - I wasn't sure what to do with the plant but I have now realized that there are choices of colour and that the plants are hardier than I thought.  I will look out for them when shopping for bulbs next time at the GC, I can't say I have ever seen them for sale, but will take a look anyway.

The yellow/white/green shade that you have Joyce does look quite stunning against a backdrop of greenery.  Mine is lovely the the foliage isn't very nice and I would imagine that slugs would enjoy a munch on it.

GD, I have never had any problems with slugs or snails nibbling at the leaves. I leave the stalks on until they wither.

  • The leaves of my Eucomis are very fleshy and have been nibbled in a few places. I wonder if the leaves are the same on your plants? No I have just taken a closer look - the leaves on yours are completely different to mine, yours are broader and a much lighter green.  The plants obviously vary quiet considerably, not only in colour but in leaf too.
