Cymbidium won't flower.

homebirdhomebird Posts: 110

imageI was given my Cymbidium 3 yrs ago and it's pretty healthy looking I think but the leaves are at least 18" long and many are  around 37" long and it's never flowered. What can I do to encourage flowers?  I feed it with orchid food monthly and water it with rainwater weekly. This summer I put it outside and plan to bring it in later this month. I am at a loss how to get it to flower for me as I have no idea what the flowers even look like....????

  • That was really helpful pansyface. I have been watering too often, keeping it too moist, therefore feeding too often and not leaving it out for the cooler nights. It's back outside now and I shall leave it out until the nights turn really cool.

Fingers crossed it will get the message and decide to flower next year.

  • Yes very useful we have the same problem never dare risk putting it outside before.

  • Well Iain, we will see who gets theirs to flower first now....image

  • Sun sun and more sun. There is a magnificent display in the Municipal Garden in Funchal, Madeira where they do not have any shade. I have a few here in Brazil, and do not shade them for 6 months of the year but some clones - I think the ones that have a strong element of species from China and Japan - do not like our climate, as we do not have cold winter temps. Good luck. Ian.

You need to get a cymbidium cold at night over winter to make it flower, 10C or under for at least a month. My stepfather used to keep his in the fridge!

  • Well, we haven't had a great deal of sun here this summer Inglezinho so we will just have to live in hope...image

I think I will leave mine out as long as possible Skandi then put it in the cold greenhouse when the frosts  start. I have to change what I have been doing...cosseting it...image

    Thankyou all..
