How many holes?
In the days when plant pots were only made of terra cotta, they had a single hole which was easily covered with a single potsherd. Is there any advantage to the multiple holes which the makers of plastic pots seem to think necessary?

Multiple holes probably reduce the amount of plastic required per pot, thereby reducing the unit cost. Other than that I can see any particular benefits.
Could be useful if one hole gets blocked up.
In nursery production, many plants are watered using capillary matting and multiple holes allows for good contact between the compost and matting, The holes set a little higher ( in grooves on the base or slightly up the sides ) allow for drainage to prevent waterlogging.
Also as busy lizzie said, if a hole is blocked ( lets say by a root ) then the drainage of the pot as a whole is not compromised.

Plant poto are extruded using molten plastic and the centre of the bottom of the pot is the point of extrusion So there cannot be a hole there. That is why the holes are round the Side.
