Home grown mushrooms

I've never seen anything on this forum about growing mushrooms; has anyone tried, and with what results?  I was given a small kit to grow mushrooms indoors on a soggy paperback book, it was good fun, took about a fortnight and produced a few ounces of rather tasteless mushrooms. More recently I bought two lots of spawn, one to grow in compost and one to grow in a drilled log.  I followed the instructions, waited nearly three years, nothing.  I'd be interested to know if anyone's succeeded.
