Ornamental cabbage in hanging basket

Hive mind I need your help! What are your thoughts and experience on ornamental cabbage in a winter hanging basket?  

I was planning on having calluna vulgaris, heuchera, ivy and lysimachia (spelling?) in my basket this year.  But I've now picked up some ornamental cabbage plants from a well known supermarket for a pound each. They don't, however, look particularly ornamental at the moment, just bog standard cabbage-y, will that change? do I need to do anything in particular? or should I just stick to my original plan.

My basket is SSE facing and in an exposed position, so it can get a bit of a battering from the wind (Cornwall and 10 miles from the coast)  It is also relatively low down as both my husband and I are on the shorter side of life!!
