Paul B3, funny you should mention about tender shrubs. The first thing I checked was the hardiness since tmcnaught01 mentioned Scotland. RHS had categorised Griselinia under H5, which is the same as Elaeagnus. That surprised me, since I always thought that Griselinia was quite tender. But times have changed, because that category is really considered hardy nowadays.
Plants like Solanum Jasminoides 'Album' was always considered tender 5-10 years ago, but where I am, it's growing everywhere like a weed and has taken over from Jasminum Officinale as the climber for summer white flowers.
