Id this plant and pruning advice

Hi, can anyone identify this plant and give me some advice on how I should prune it now that most of the flowers have lost their colour?  Should I trim these stems just below the faded flower head or much further down close to where they branch off?  I have a largish garden and I know very little about gardening but am keen to do it myself.  If there are any general rules of thumb that I can possibly apply to other plants in my garden please let me know.

    Well it looks a little like a Hydrangea but I'm not 100% certain as I cannot tell the size of the plant from your picture.

    This all depends on the size you wish your Hydrangea to attain .

    You can trim beneath the expiring flowers to the clearly visible green side shoots , or some people cut them virtually to ground ; that is three to four side shoots above the ground level .
