Thanks so much for all the responses, some really good answers here! I like the idea of the bricks, looks really neat, and as you say, is extremely long lasting. I'll do my sums and work out a plan of action.
If you want to get a mower up to the fence, bricks might not be wide enough even if laid as a soldier course - second hand or cheap basic slabs might work better albeit not half as nice as DHR's border edges. Of course what you should really do is create some beautiful planting borders liks DHR's and then do the brick edging ;P

The only problem with bricks is they will not stop the lawn spreading, so are not low maintenance. Also you have to keep them clean by scrubbing with algicide. Hard work. I still think my low budget idea is best!
I have brick edging on part of my lawn. The bricks are laid along the length on compacted soil, no cement anywhere. They have been down for 15+ years and never moved. Mower runs over them easy peasey.
