Dying Fuji cherry

i bought a Fuji cherry tree (prunus incisa kojou-no-mai) around the beginning of July. I put it immediately in a terracotta pot in John Innes 3.
It has just started to die off in bits, and seems to be progressing quite quickly. It is west facing, gets sun from approx 3pm until sunset. Pics below:
As we have had quite a lot of rain recently, I have only watered it a few times.
Any ideas what the cause could be?
Many thanks

I don't think there is anything wrong with your tree. It's not unusual for small and young trees to lose leaves and even 'shut down' earlier than other more mature trees. However, if this is longterm, I do think you will need a pot bigger than the one it is in. It's OK for now, but eventually, it's better in a wider pot.
Also, I think you need to be watering this tree more often than what you have said. Pot grown plants will not be like one planted into the ground. Rain will not get into the pots like in the ground. There is only a small area for rain to get to for your plant, whereas in the ground, surrounding soil captures the water and eventually, it will find its way to the tree. This is why it's important that in summer you need to water it miniumum once a week. Every day in temperatures over 25c. Even into autumn, you should still water it weekly.
Thank you Borderline, I gave it a really rhorough watering yesterday.
Your advice is much appreciated!
