Lavatera not growing

I have a patio lavatera that I purchased in spring. It just refuses to grow. Its in a pot in the sun been fed weekly but is only 6" and the occasional leaf turns yellow and drops off. Years ago I had lavatera and remember them as quick growing and strong. Any advice greatly appreciated

Something in the pot it doesn't like. Could be anything, including overfeeding. Throw it away and start again. When you do this you might see something, weevils, millipedes etc..If it's any consolation, I grow nearly everything in my garden from either cuttings or seed. I throw at least 50% away. That may sound a lot but it it's a lot better than nature - around 1%. Sorry. Better luck next time.

They may be suffering because the pot is too small. Also, don't give it nice compost, I suggest you pot it in normal garden soil or a loam based compost. Make sure there are sufficient holes in the bottom of pot as it sounds like it's a too damp. If the holes are small, put rocks or similar at the base of pot before pouring in soil. Don't feed it and see what happens. They really do better in the ground though.

  • Thank you. I bought the plants from an advert in the RHS Garden magazine. I gave one away and that isn't healthy either. In future I will stick to my local nursery. I may have been over watering as the compost looks dry. I will try planting in the garden and leave it to it.
