Strange gunge

imageHi, does anyone know what this red coloured and slimy looking mess is that's tucked right into my large oak tree? I think it's a fungus but I'm worried it will harm the oak tree

Looks like a slime mould, possibly Arcyria ferruginea.  They feed only on dead material and are harmless to living plant tissue.  It'll probably be gone in a few days.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
