over wintering geraniums
i have just over 300 geranium plants, which have given a wonderful display this year
my problem, how does one overwinter them?
someone told me that the best way was to take them up, tie them in bundles and hang them up in frost proof shed.
was he having me on or can you really save them for next year by this method.

I take it you mean pelargonium?
I'm not a fan of them but I really can't see them surviving the winter being hung up to dry.
If you google "winter perlagoniums hanging" you do get some information on this method but the consensus seems that you might not get a high survival rate. Personally I take cuttings in early autumn and also cut back the original plants and then keep them all in a greenhouse over winter. My sister also does this but keeps them in her bathroom on the windowsill as she doesn't have a greenhouse.
300 plants would take rather a lot of room though so it might be worth taking cuttings of your favourites and trying the hanging method for the others.
