Norway maple looking poorly
i think this is crimson king. I only noticed today how it looks, pretty awful really. leaves are crispy round the edge.
would you agree this is tree under stress, rather than tree getting ready for autumn?
What is the likely cause? We haven't had any cold winds yet.

Hi. That is usually a sign of sun scorch or wind burn. Is it an established plant? Is it in a pot or the ground?
These, as with most Acers, need shelter, dappled shade and good drainage (but regular rain water). If any of these are missing, it may explain it.
Its only 3or 4 yo. In the ground. Hmm...no shade, in the sun and it's pretty windy. I did think this variety was the best choice acer for a windy spot, or at least faired better than most.
I would seriously consider moving it. I believe Spring time is best but I think you can do in Autumn too. Have a read around first - as I have never moved one. When I moved to my house there was a lovely red Japanese Acer but in sun-facing spot - I didn't want to chance my luck at moving it as it looked 10 years old but amazingly it has faired very well. All my other Acers are in semi-shade and are gorgeous trees.
