Fence issue

Hi there guys....

Ok well I've just bought a new property and the previous owners had painted the fence blue. It's doesn't seem to be fence paint and I think it's emulsion. Ive never painted a fence before so when I tried to use the fence stainer it seems very watery and just didnt take well because of what was used previously. Eventually I'm going to replace the fence because it's looking really old now but just looking for a short time quick fix. Any ideas what I could use to cover the hideous blue paint with.

Cheers Fence friends :)

a blue fence, how very 1990's. was there loads of decking in the garden as well? as it appears the previous residents were Groundforce fans,

anyway the only way you will cover blue paint (without multiple coats) is with something even darker, black maybe or something thicker than stain, you can get fence paint or even masonry paint that will do the job, might take a couple of coats but you might even make it white

I had a notion to paint my fence blue back in the 90s a la Groundforce!  The only thing I managed to find that covered it was gloss paint, I opted for a dark conker brown - it was cheaper to buy in bulk.  Even then it took 3 coats to completely obliterate the blue.  Thank goodness I moved away soon after that!

If you think it's emulsion, you might need to sand it off. Otherwise, you'll have to find something to paint over it, and your options can be limited.

If it's a woodstain/paint, then you can paint over it, but you'll have to paint darker so it depends on the look you want to achieve. I used black to cover the orange cedar stuff that everyone seems to love so much round here...image

If you're going to replace it, you might be as well to leave it as it is. Or use a tin of gloss as Angie suggests. Budget might dictate the choice  image

would it be cupinal or the like.

if so just get a dark colour cupinl and paint over then a second coat of the colour you want it to be.

when i took over an allotment , some years ago, like you, i was faced with the ground force syndrom everything was painted blue, even the greenhouse.

took a long time before sanity was restored to the plot..

I painted my picnic table blue in the nineties - tres chic.

In the noughties one of my daughter's friends sat on it and it collapsed. I was most grateful.

If you're going to replace the fence anyway why not save your time, energy and money and leave it as it is till you do?
