Lavender pruning

How should the lavendar below be pruned now that it's finished flowering? Some say to cut down to the wood but can't see where that would be on this one.

The normal rule is to cut into the new wood to make it bushier and less straggly, but do not cut into the old wood. That one looks a bit unhappy, you need someone more expert than me.

Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.

Hi Stephen. I can see you have already cut off the flower stems and would leave it at that for this year. Maybe add grit or shingle around the plant and place somewhere sunny and sheltered to grow ready for next year image

Yup, removed the dead flower bits. Only had this one a year. It looks rather sad. I wasn't sure if I should chop and let it grow renewed or not. Unlike most lavendar I've seen, I can't see where the new wood ends and the old wood starts on this one :D

  • I'd agree with the comments this far. Don't cut it any more. Keep watering to a minimum. Use rainwater if you are in a hard water area and water from the bottom sparingly.

But generally lavender pruning is very easy.

The soil looks a bit rich and peaty for lavender. They really like very good drainage.

I agree to leave it until spring to give it a trim but only above where you see growth.
