Climbing compassion looking sickly

Hi everyone, I have a 2 year old climbing compassion rose next to my front door (west facing) in a large round 30cm+ pot. I started growing it up a obelisk this year. The flowers are really poor (few and small/browning) and the leaves yellowing. Yesterday I also noticed the plant is covered in ants. im not sure what to do.. scrap it or try and save it?

How can I save it?

Or what should I replace it with? (Does get very warm in the summer).

Thankyou for any help!

If there are ants, it shows the plant is dry. roses need moist, hearty growing conditions to do their best.

By a house wall will also be very dry, so it's not the best site unless you're really vigilant with it's care.

If you move it somewhere less challenging, get some better soil (not just compost) in the pot, preferably with well rotted manure added to help retain moisture, and water it really well, that will help. It would be worth pruning back all the ropey looking foliage etc too. You should then see some decent new growth in the next few weeks.

There will be specialist foods available too, but for now, sort out the soil and the site and water it. Once it's looking a bit better, you can look into feeding. No point in doing that at the moment. Anything potted needs more care than in the ground.  There are little patio roses which are suitable for pots - climbers are a different beast altogether, and are best in the ground.image

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
