Wild cherry tree?
I have what I believe is a wild cherry tree (inherited from a previous owner of my home). At least, I think it's a wild cherry. It had tiny bunches of whitish/cream, fluffy flowers in spring (nothing like normal cherry flowers), which don't smell very nice, followed by bunches of tiny black cherry-like fruit in mid to late summer. The fruits have tiny stones. The leaves are like a normal cherry tree, but smaller. I want to prune it as it's getting a bit too wide and tall. What is the best time to prune? It provides some screening at the back of the garden so I don't want to kill it!

A photo would help to identify it.
I have wild cherries, the fruits are yellow and red and quite sweet to eat with almost normal cherry type stones. They are quite big trees. I just cut off bits that are in the way in summer.
I have wild cherry and bird cherry but neither have small bunches of fluffy flowers. Agree with Busy Lizzie, we need a photo

Maybe it's blackthorn and the fruits are sloes? Has it got thorns?
