Californian lilac tree
I have a 10' tall Californian lilac tree which is getting very spindly, with the inner branches bare of growth. The outer branches are fine. Is it ideal to heavy trim back and, if so, what time of year should this be done. I wouldn't like to lose it as it is a feature.

Hi Maisie - if by Californian lilac you mean ceonothus, then they do not grow back from old wood, so if you cut back hard you are likely to lose it. They do grow pretty quickly however, so it might be time to replace it with a new one if you are not happy with the way it is growing.
Thanks Chicky, perhaps I will just let it meander on. Its the OH who doesn't thnk it looks good! Me, I don't mind.
