Identify hedge
Can anyone please give me advice, unfortunately we had to remove part of this hedge to replace the gas main.
firstly I need to identify what type it is and secondly what is the best solution to fill this gap, the gap is approximately 4 foot wide by 6 foot high, It doesn't need to fill the gap straight away but as I am a novice I just don't know where to start, any advice would be great.
kind Regards
Helen

You hedge looks like an escallonia.
My neighbour has one that grows up the fence and pokes through my side here and there.
The remaining hedge may fill the space in time, but I'm sure others here will be able to advise

Have you ever seen flowers on this hedge? The leaves look like a type of Escallonia. Perhaps Macrantha Rubra.
I'd say Escallonia too. if you prep the ground well Helen (it's probably quite hard and dry there) you could simply replant with another one - they're fairly easy to obtain. Did you notice the flower colour earlier in the year? Most of them are shades of pink, although there is a white too.
It's hard to see exactly what the gap is like from your photo. You might be able to wire a few stems together to bridge the gap a bit. Alternatively, you could prune it back quite a bit, water well, give it some liquid food, or some general fertiliser, and a mulch of compost, and there should be new growth over the next month.
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

That's great customer service, many others would simply walk away.
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
It's certainly good to hear that the OP cares, but doesn't the utility company have any responsibility to reinstate and repair damage anyway?
