This year I discovered penstemons, perennial verbenas , dark red marguerites, and lilies. Can't wait to get more varieties next year - even though I have bought loads already.
I also discovered I don't particularly like big purple aliums. The plant isn't worth the space taken up by the messy leaves.
I didn't get any petunias and I didn't miss them.
I will not buy any un-named dahlias. If you get a named one you have some chance that it might be what's on the label.

if you like Lilies you will like Hemerocallis (Day Lilies). Very easy to grow, all sizes and colours, not affected by Lily Beetles, and over 80,000 varieties to choose from!

A few years ago i grew some Achilles from seed in different colours. I thought they would attract the bees, but nothing. So i dug them up. Never again.

They don't do well for me either Logan. I find wild fennel does a similar job and attracts bees as well. There were also a lot of blue bottles on mine this year. I thought they were attracted to more pungent matter
I have never grown Petunias until this year, when I bought P. Night Sky, because of its unusual flowers. It is still performing well, so I will probably grow it again next year, and maybe try some other varieties.
Love day lilies and have several large clumps all planted by the previous owners. I do love them but I probably wouldn't have bothered with them as the flowers are gone so quickly and then you just have a lump of green. I would rather have more Agapanthus(African lilies) as the flowers last much longer.
i like all dahlia so I don't mind buying wilko cheapies and I haven't had one fail yet Where as my more expensive diner plate dahlia have been a bit hit and miss although the ones which have done well are beautiful.
i do like the large allium and even though you are not meant to remove the leaves I always do and they still manage to come up year after year.
i want to add more ferns to the garden and for spring I am going to replace all my tulips as most of them came up blind this year. I also want to add some of the dwarf varieties into pots.

I forgot to add to my discoveries, Chelsea chopping sedum. They're not sprawling all over the shop this year.
I discovered cosmos for the first time this year. ....I will definitely grow them again. Disappointed that the dahlia seeds weren't pompom as stated on the packet but there are several lovely colours which I will keep the rest will go on the compost heap.
