Clematis Montana

I hve the early flowering typical pink Montana, inherited when I bought the hse.  Is more like a wisteria with its thick woody base so probably a great age.  Flowers perfusely but is a maniac.  I cut it back after flowering & it grew within wks to some triffid-like beast.  Hve continued to fight with the monster on a bi-monthly basis, it always winning!     As it is at the frt of hse, on a wall, threatening to snatch any unfortunate pedestrian, I need to control this lunatic somehow.  Can't keep up with sheering the tendrils constantly.

wld like to prune it back hard, say to 3', is it likely to survive if I do that now?

Hve read u shld do it straight after flowering, but that is a long way off.

Cutting it back so severely would mean you having to sacrifice the flowers but as you have been trimming it all through this year then you have already removed the shoots that would have flowered next year. Unfortunately it will continue to grow like this so maybe you need a rethink about whether to keep it there or not. You could put supporting wires on the wall and tie in the long shoots as they appear.
