Holes in iris leaves

hello.

My Mum has a small iris in her back yard. Recently strange holes have appeared in the leaves. These holes start large on the right side of the leafs and grow smaller towards the left. It looks very odd indeed.

I wonder if anyone knows what may be causing these holes?

Your mum's plant looks more like a Hosta leaf. Iris leaves tend to be strappy looking. If it is a Hosta, it's most likely damage from slugs and small insects.

Looks more like a Canna leaf to me. Something has had a bite out of it before the leaf has properly unfurled - creating the effect of a line of holes. It's still most likely to be slugs/snails anyway.

Have you a photo of the whole plant?

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
