Fungus help

Hello, can anyone help in identifying whether these are likely to be causing a problem? They're proliferating quite quickly and the apple tree near the largest growths is not happy. I had put it down to aphid and ant damage but now wonder if it might have anything to do with the fungus.

They're close in to the ground and fairly solid - I keep thinking they're stones in the lawn etc.

    I think somebody identified those recently as earth balls. (Never heard of them myself till then). image

    Thanks pp - I didn't see a previous thread but I'm glad you remembered the name as I think you're probably right. Although the pics I've seen so far don't seem to have the same pattern on top as most of mine, the general appearance, texture and habit sound right. And I'm back to blaming aphids for my sad tree.
