Head to your local pound shop......buy a couple of packs of plastic forks.  Stick the handle of forks into the ground......hey presto. ......cats can't get enough room to walk / go toilet in bed. Also won't harm the cats.

We could write a book on this, from this forum (who's in?), and my conclusion is: there are deterrents but no complete prevention.

Cats seek out bare soil so avoiding any bare patches is key, as Lyn says. Using mesh, spikey branches, etc are good cover for a veg patch. I have read that citrus peel helps too, so you could try that for a 'free' and organic solution. I expect that only a fortress guarded by lions would really help...

    Good luck!

Dare I say the solution is to make the owners responsible for any harm their pets cause?

    Just a thought.

I have one persistent cat and a few irritating pigeons, as does my daughter who also has a dog. Dog has been trained as a cat/pigeon scarer and visits me a couple of times a week. Job done. He gets fun and exercise, cat gets annoyed, pigeons don't seem to make the connection image

So my solution, borrow a dog image

  • We're thinking of using the forks but I'm putting down coffee grounds for the time being.. Thanks for the advice everyone!

Hostafan1, They are Cats, they do what they do, it's annoying but they aren't controllable and we should try to share the planet we're all on.  I'd have no idea who owns them anyway or if it's more than one! lol and my plants are not worth much at all!

But that would just mean bigger piles of cat pooimage

    scroggin says:

I would dispute that cats aren't controllable, it's just that most owners choose not to.

I think that's nearer the mark scroggin.

Two people have blamed owners for cat pooing behaviour.
Are they suggesting to force a cat indoors forever? The only compromise here I can see is asking the carer to use a litter tray.
I'm about to try it for a stray- it's fouling our veg.

It wouldnt surprise to find these blamer-types in favour of culling cats for chasing birds too, regardless that most cat carers keep cat populations down by paying to have them sterilised.(if they can catch them😜)
