Jasione laevis 'Blue Light'

Hi, I have bought this before and wondered how these can succeed without the use of slug pellets. My Folks have a heavy alkaline clay and it has had much gravel added to make it better to be a rock garden. I have planted this plant in this situation in full sun and it got gobbled up by our slimy friends. I live on some rubbish soil with lots of half brick and stone but the soil is neutral. Hoping for a different type of snail here but thinking I may not be right. My Folks have a few troughs which are fast draining.

Has anyone grown this plant without slug pellets? Thanks :)

I have grown these plants before and they are quite fussy. Are you sure it is the slugs that are attacking them? They actually do not like alkaline soils and prefer neutral to acidic conditions. They also prefer light free-draining sandy soils, so not at all easy for your conditions. Another option is to grow them in pots so you can control the conditions.

  • That's a fair point. I have had trouble with things like the alpine Gentians too. Seem to fade.

So I guess my mum's alpine trough, Lots of gravel and sun all day. :)

Motorman1, if you are growing your Gentians in the ground, I think they will suffer. Yes, your mum's alpine trough, or you can create something similar too with the correct soil and drainage. Good luck.

  • Cheers, thanks for that. Troughs all the way and lots of drainage.

    :) Ta.
